Close Call, A&E & Shootings

What a day! I asked Cobby if he’s fetching me to driving yesterday and got a shocking msg that his mom is in the hospital and he’s going to see her after work. What happened? I just saw her on Tuesday and she was still fine. He said that she had severe chest pains and her blood pressure shot up, so now at SGH A&E observation. So I cancelled my driving lesson and we went to the hospital immediately after work.

On the way to the hospital Cobby told me that he met with an accident in the morning! Apparently a motorcyclist riding in front of him, for reasons unclear to him, did not see the van parked at the side of the road. So he just rode straight into the back of the van!

Duh… -_-

So the rider hit the van and fell right into the path of Cobby’s car!!

EMERGENCY BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!

Cobby was desperately thinking as the car pulls to a stop on the wet road, “Oh god please stop!!! Please don’t let me roll over him!!!!” When the car finally stopped, the rider was so close to the car that Cobby can’t see where he was. He quickly jumped out and found out that one of the rider’s fingers was under the wheel, oops! He quickly got back in the car again and reversed the vehicle abit.

Cobby told me that the impact flung the rider’s helmet off from his head and from the initial observation, his collarbone is all bruised up and there were abrasions on his hands and fingers. The rider told Cobby his name and that he’s a doctor and started calling his workplace to reschedule the appointments of his patients. Then he called his wife and asked her to come fetch him to the hospital.

Cobby was completely freaked out with the knowledge that he’s a doctor. He frantically called his insurance agent after the incident for advice as he was so worried that the doctor may sue him for injuring his finger, what if he’s a surgeon? What if he can never work again because this finger was caught under a wheel of an imbecile!!

Lawsuit! Charges! Financial ruin!

Cobby contemplated his bleak future as he helped bandage the rider’s bleeding finger… OK honestly, I don’t think rolling the tip of your finger under a 1.6 liter car would destroy your finger permanently and ruin your career as a doctor but Cobby was really worried. The insurance agent shared my point of view but advice him to go to log a police report and go to some place (I can’t remember) to take an official photograph of his front bumper. Just to prove that he did not knock the rider down. Well, even the police officer didn’t think it was necessary and told Cobby that he was not considered “involved” in the accident, but he logged down his report in the police log anyway.

So you can imagine how Cobby was feeling when he ended his dramatic morning with news of his mom being sent to the A&E. Poor Cobby – Bad day… But it’s not so bad… When we reached the hospital, she’s conscious and talking, but looked pretty pale and still complaining of milder chest pains as the doctors have already gave her a dose of pain medication in the afternoon. MF, Cobby’s cousin, said that mom called her in the afternoon and asked her to accompany her to the clinic as she was experiencing chest pains, but a few minutes later she called again and asked MF to cancel her clinic appointment as the pain was so bad she needs to go to A&E.

So they were there in the A&E waiting for a bed since 3 plus in the afternoon! No available beds!!! I thought that they should have sent her to the TTSH. Anyway… So we waited till 9 plus and still no available bed! The nurse informed us that mom would still need to do another round of ECG later around 11 plus. If the results are ok she’ll be able to go home. So we decided to go home first and wait for the nurse to call us with the results later that night.

Oh have you heard about the shooting at Outram Park MRT station?! So dramatic!!! While we were waiting at the A&E I saw the news. The news showed a video footage (by a train passenger) of the man lying face down on the floor as police still had their guns pointed at him.

CoCo's version...

I thought that he was just surrendering and the police was about to arrest him. Only later did I know that the police officer actually shot him dead! Wah... so scary. This morning the media was in a frenzy as people discussed on whether it was necessary for the police officer to shoot him dead.

Please lah people, the guy is an armed murderer with a knife in his hand and was standing just 3 meters away from the officer. Shooting him in the chest is the safest way to protect yourself as well as the people around the place. It’s an MRT station you know.

If the officer decided to go for the arms or legs, he is taking several risks! What if he missed? The assailant may attack the officer or worse, attack civilians or take them hostage. How is the officer supposed to make up for that kind of mistake? Not forgetting that even if he didn’t miss the same risks still remain! So the sure way to eliminate the risks is a shot to the chest. So I support the brave officer’s choice of action.

Pretty dramatic day, but we were glad it ended with no serious aftermaths. The rider called Cobby while we were at the hospital and told him that he’s ok, fractured collarbone and rib, but he’ll be just fine. (his fingers are fine – in case your wondering) Cobby’s mama is ok too, its not a heart attack, and now she’s at home resting. Phew…
